Play Therapy

You’ve read lots of books and you’ve soaked in shorts and reels about parenting until your algorithm is showing absolutely nothing else. You’ve now found lots of things you don’t want to do but really have no idea how to tie it all together.

Play therapy meets children at their developmental stage versus demanding them to communicate verbally with adults. Using the therapeutic powers of play, children find resolution to their struggles. Many parents are worried that their child may have “outgrown” this approach. While it is true, playing changes form, playfulness shouldn’t stop. All children benefit from the specialized training in child development that a Play Therapist receives.

Your child is your world!

You see the beauty that is your child. You see their strengths, their sense of humor, their gifts, you see them for them. All the while, they’re struggling with behavioral hiccups or choosing friend groups that make you concerned. You tell them how incredible they are, but they’re convinced you’re only saying it because you “have to.” You are tired because so many of your interactions end in a power struggle and that tenacity you hope they keep as adults sure is hard to parent now.

For children ages 3-12, play therapy near Canton, GA is shown to be beneficial for a variety of presenting issues. Children over the age of 12 will benefit from the in-depth training in child-development that a play therapist possesses even if they’re not engaging in play the way younger children do. Our stance at Playful Hearts Counseling, LLC though is that you’re never too old to play.

At the start of therapy our teen clients report feeling they’re in a demand-comply relationship with their parents. Their parents tell them that they value being a safe space for their kids and that they want open lines of communication but our teen clients report it doesn’t feel that way because every little story or joke turns into a lecture. Our teen clients report that they actually don’t want to spend all of their time in their rooms but they don’t really know how to talk to their parents. It is often reported by our teen clients that the only thing their parents ever talk to them about is school. We know from talking to their parents that every question they ask is met with “I don’t know” or “fine.” We fully understand there is potential for richer connection and joy. We can help. Parenting Support

You had a vision of what parenting would be like. You imagined you’d be the person who parented with ease, maintained a tidy home, and drove a (mostly) clean car. You’d make memories, speak in silly voices, laugh, run, and play. In your vision, your teen would come to you for the big conversations. Instead though, you open your eyes unsure of what to expect. Sometimes your child is nothing but smiles but other times, the switch seems to flip so quickly that your head spins. You swore you’d break generational cycles. You weren’t going to yell. You crave the sounds of your children laughing. Families that work with us find deeper connection to their children, they understand their children from a developmental lens and learn how to stop escalating their kids. They walk away from our time together, connected to and thankful for their children with clearer expectations and ways to express loving limits.

Individual Counseling

You have met every marker of success. You have your dream house, the car you always wanted, the career you thought would fulfill you but you’re still so empty. You watch other parents with their kids after soccer practice and don’t see your own children light up with you the way other kids do when they see their mom or dad. The most intimate moment you have with your spouse is sitting on opposite ends of the couch mindlessly scrolling your phones. You never feel “enough” and you aren’t really sure who you are, what you love, or what makes you happy.
